Improve the Quality of Your Soil

Improving the quality of your soil is something any gardener can do to stimulate plant growth, and see greater results in the garden.  By working through a few tried and tested techniques, you can make any soil more receptive to plant growth, and allow greater nutrient uptake for stronger, healthier plants.  Although these measures cannot turn your soil instantly, by keeping up a program of soil improvement, you can eventually create the perfect soil that you and your plants desire.

The first step to improving soil quality is to work out exactly what type of soil you have in your garden currently.  Soil comes generally in three different types: clay, sand, and somewhere in between.  Ideally, you're looking to get your soil somewhere in the middle, and even if you feel your soil might be perfect naturally, you can always benefit from some simple treatment processes.

Sandy soil is very fine, and easily runs through your fingers, whereas clay soil is much more compact.  It is sometimes difficult to spot the distinction straight off, but if you get into your soil and have a feel, you should be able to work out which yours is.  If you have clay soil, one of the best forms of treatment is to mix in sand.  Buy adding sharp sand to your soil and mixing it thoroughly, you end up neutralizing the quality of your soil, which will ultimately improve growth.  Alternatively, if you have sandy soil, add clay or limestone to try and fill out the soil.  Although the results are not overnight, you will see an improvement in the quality of your soil and the subsequent growth fairly quickly.

Another favorite technique of many gardeners as far as improving soil quality is concerned is by distributing organic matter to improve nutrient content.  One of the most effective means of achieving this goal is by laying straw evenly across the soil, and turning it through the top layer.  By allowing the straw to decompose within the soil, you can eventually create a fertilized, nutritious soil quality, which is immensely beneficial to plant growth.

Improving your soil quality is an easy and effective way to vastly improve the quality of plants and vegetables you can grow.  By taking some of these easy steps, you can improve the quality of your soil within months, which will ultimately lead to stronger and healthier plant growth.
